Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Unveil 2026 Partnership Plan
February 09, 2023The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance is undergoing major changes as the three companies have announced a new strategy that will bring them closer together. The companies have agreed to cut Renault's holding in Nissan from 43% to 15% and Nissan's investment in Renault's EV and software company, Ampere. Meanwhile, Mitsubishi may also invest in Ampere, and all three companies will work on developing new technologies such as solid-state batteries, software-defined vehicles, and autonomous driving.
The deal is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2023 following regulatory clearance, and it represents a major step forward for the Alliance after months of negotiations. Renault and Nissan are hoping to balance, de-risk, and expand their presence in Latin America, where they are planning to launch two similar EVs and a Renault-badged vehicle that will be manufactured by Nissan.
The Alliance is also focusing on India, where all of the Indian automakers' larger vehicles will use Renault architectures and the companies will work on "many new vehicle projects" including SUVs. In Europe, Renault and Nissan will collaborate on the FlexEVan, the first software-defined vehicle, as well as the next generation of C-Segment EVs, distribution, aftersales, circular economy, batteries, and a large EV charging infrastructure.
The Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi CEOs held a press conference today to discuss the details of their new partnership plan and the exciting new developments that are in store for 2026.
