Ford Teams Up with Chinese Tech for $3.5B Michigan Battery Plant
February 15, 2023Ford has announced plans to invest $3.5 billion in a new battery plant in Michigan, set to become the largest of its kind in the US.
The facility will produce batteries for the company's electric vehicles, and is expected to create 10,800 jobs in the area.
Ford will partner with Chinese battery manufacturer SK Innovation to develop the technology for the plant, which will use SK Innovation's high-energy density battery cells.
The deal marks a major step for Ford's electrification plans, as the company aims to have 40% of its global vehicle volume to be fully electric by 2030.
The Michigan plant is set to begin operations in 2025.
However, the move has drawn criticism from some quarters, who say the deal could compromise US national security.
